Research Interests and History

Foluso Ladeinde’s main research interests pertain to compressible turbulence, preferably with combustion, and the associated analytical and high-performance computational procedures for direct numerical simulation (DNS), large-eddy simulation (LES), and the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equation (RANS) procedures for calculating turbulent flows. A current specific focus of Ladeinde's research concerns the modeling and analysis of supersonic combustion as it applies to vehicles intended for hypersonic flight, with dual-mode scramjet and rotating detonation engines as examples. On this subject, Ladeinde and his coworkers have recently published improvements made to supersonic combustion simulation techniques within the framework of LES and the flamelet method, as well as the differential flammability of certain candidate fuels for supersonic combustion in propulsive applications.  Another current interest of Ladeinde concerns the dynamics of spray in the presence of shock waves, drop breakup, evaporation, combustion, and turbulence and the interaction of these complicated phenomena.  Ladeinde is a Visiting Professor and a Faculty Fellow of the United States Air Force and a Visiting Scientist at the United States Department of Energy at the Brookhaven National Laboratory. He is a Life Member and an Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) and a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). For two terms, Dr. Ladeinde chaired the External Review Board of the NASA Center for Aerospace Research at North Carolina (NC) A&T University in Greensboro, NC. He has produced more than 800 publications in internationally-recognized archival journals, peer-reviewed conference proceedings, conference papers, and newspaper articles. He has served as an Associate Editor (2009-2013) of the AIAA Journal, the flagship journal of the AIAA, as well as a Book Proposal Reviewer for Cambridge University Press in the area of theoretical fluid dynamics. He is also an Associate Editor of The ASCE Journal of Aerospace Engineering. Dr. Ladeinde’s 2010 paper on scramjet computer simulation won AIAA Best Paper Award. He is the Founding Chairman and Chair (2015-2019) of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the State University of New York in Songdo, Incheon, South Korea. Dr. Ladeinde’s research has been funded by AFOSR, AFRL, DARPA, NASA, NSF, US Navy, and commercial industries.
