Pre-College WISE

High School and Middle School WISE provide multi-faceted programs designed for students who show academic promise or interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. WISE encourages students to pursue STEM by providing exciting hands-on research and learning opportunities. Our programs focus on the importance of mentoring younger students to help build their competence and confidence while providing them with an impactful experience.

High School

High School WISE provides multi-faceted programs designed for high school students who show academic promise or interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) through collaboration with Eastern Suffolk BOCES. WISE aims to encourage students to pursue STEM by linking Stony Brook University graduate and faculty mentors with high school students. Mentors work closely with H.S. WISE students in their field of expertise to provide hands-on experiences. H.S. WISE is a three-year program that focuses on a different aspect of STEM learning and research each year. Students meet afterschool for 10 two hour sessions.

10th Grade: Students are introduced to STEM applications through hands-on group activities. Students are linked with two mentors (one mentor for the fall sessions and another mentor for the spring) to enhance their first year experience. Students have opportunities to visit laboratories to obtain firsthand experience.

11th Grade: Students participate in smaller group activities led by faculty and graduate WISE mentors. During this year, they delve deeper into a STEM discipline with one mentor.

12th Grade: Students choose from participating in a group research project, a college science or math course through the Young Scholars Program, independent research, or an individual project. Students choosing to pursue a project will be linked with a WISE mentor to assist them through their process.

H.S. WISE is coordinated and reimbursed through Eastern Suffolk BOCES. Each school district must provide a teacher or chaperone to accompany the students. Transportation is provided by the school districts. ESBOCES can provide transporation for an additional fee if district is unable to provide busing.
