Celebrating the Class of 2024
The Mechanical Engineering department celebrated the graduating class of 2024 during a May 17th ceremony, commemorating academic, research, and leadership achievements. Graduates and their families took pride in marking the transition from student life to the next phase of their careers, whether it’s entering the workforce or furthering their education.
This year the department honored two students with the Richard S. Lee Research Excellence Award.Soroush Saririan (BE) demonstrated a dedication to research and has committed to pursuing an advanced degree. Jasmine Ives (MS) was recognized for an exceptional thesis defense.
The Undergraduate Award for Academic Excellence was presented to Nabil Kamal, who was the highest academically ranked undergraduate with a GPA of 3.95.
Additionally, the top 10% of academically high-achieving undergraduates were given an award for Academic Honors. Recipients include Brandon Tang, Robert Casal, Brian Li, Abhishek Basnet, Christopher Caporusso, James Davila, and Volodymyr Brusak.
The department also presented Student Activity Leadership Awards, recognizing those who went above-and-beyond in their respective student organizations. Congratulations to
Alex Herrera, President of AIAA; Kumpu Ide, President of the Stony Brook Solar Racing Team; Brian Li, Treasurer of the Stony Brook Motorsports Team; and Christopher Caporusso, Secretary of the Robotics Team.
The top three Senior Design teams are selected based on student's performance throughout the two-semester project. Selections were made based on verified prototype performance, excellent teamwork, and a demonstration of consistent, logical thought processes. Winning teams were:
First place: Continuous Fiber/Wire Reinforced PrinterAutonomous Launcher for Winged Aerial Robots
Yi Chong, James Davila, Andre Ramnath, and Peng Fei Ye; Advised by Prof. Nilanjan Chakraborty
Second place: Automation of Dip Coating Production Process
Andre Esfandiari, Aldo Ochoa, Ariadna Paltis, and Nestoras Patsalis; Advised by Prof. Jay Mendelson
Third place: Autonomous Launcher for Winged Aerial Robots
Chris Caporusso, Krystian Makocki, Angel Reyes, and Paul Yan; Advised by Prof. William Stewart
This year, the department introduced the Student Recognition Award. This award goes to graduating students of any degree who exemplified strong character, overcame barriers, shown resiliency in academic pursuits, or have had an extraordinary impact on their peers. The inaugural awards were presented to:
- Kumpu Ide, for having an extraordinary impact on his peers
- Kushal Kumar Iyyapareddy, for resilience in academic pursuits
- Hans Kiessling, for exemplifying strong character
