Chair's Message

P. Scott Carney

Welcome to Stony Brook University Mechanical Engineering.

We make. We measure. We motivate. Our discipline emerged with the steam engine and the locomotive. Today we are using AI tools to build robots and design rockets to explore the solar system. Mechanical engineering lives where thoughts become things and the literal rubber meets the road.

SBU Mechanical Engineering faculty are world-class. Cormorants do it. Loons do it. Flying fish do it. Robots at SBU do it. Professor William Stewart designs and builds robots that swim through the water and fly through the air. Whether perfectly redistributing the load on an eggshell, or absorbing the energy of crashing waves, Professor Lifeng Wang studies and designs structured materials with amazing mechanical properties.

Above all, we are committed to our students — to success at every level and for a lifetime. Everen Azeloglu earned a BE with us and an MS from SBU  Biomedical Engineering before getting a PhD at Columbia University in Biomedical Engineering.  Today he is engineering solutions for patients with kidney disease on the faculty of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Unlocking the secrets of matter?  That takes serious physics and outstanding engineering. Alumna Jennifer Maceiko is Senior Piping Design Engineer at Brookhaven National Laboratory where she designs the systems that keep the cold stuff just this side of absolute zero.

Does your path run through mechanical engineering?

Grateful every day to be a Seawolf,

P. Scott Carney
