What is Mechanical Engineering?

Mechanical Engineering involves the application of principles of physics for analysis, design, manufacturing, and maintenance of mechanical systems. It is one of the oldest and broadest engineering disciplines. It requires a solid understanding of core concepts including mechanics, kinematics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and energy. Mechanical engineers use the core principles as well as other knowledge in the field to design and analyze motor vehicles, aircraft, heating and cooling systems, watercraft, manufacturing plants, industrial equipment and machinery, robotics, medical devices and more.

The mechanical engineer has been called the general practitioner among engineering professions. The job requires education and skills that span a broad range of technical, social, environmental, and economic problems. In general, however, the mechanical engineer is concerned with controlling the principles of motion, energy, and force through mechanical solutions.

One of the advantages of selecting mechanical engineering as your specialty is that it is a fairly general and all-purpose engineering degree. That means you will be able to gain employment at many different companies across the nation. Your chances of finding employment as a mechanical engineer are high due to the nature of the work and the fact that it encompasses so much.
