Chair's Message
Welcome to Stony Brook University Mechanical Engineering.
We make. We measure. We motivate. Our discipline emerged with the steam engine and the locomotive. Today we are using AI tools to build robots and design rockets to explore the solar system. Mechanical engineering lives where thoughts become things and the literal rubber meets the road.
Stick your hand out the car window and surf the wind, switching between smooth stable air and the dance of undulating vortices. Professor Spencer Zimmerman has turned that into science as he studies turbulent flows in his lab. Tired of conforming to the machines around you? Professor Shanshan Yao is building machines that conform to us. She makes flexible electronic sensors you can wear like a Band-Aid and soft actuators for haptic feedback.
Above all, we are committed to our students — to success at every level and for a lifetime. Acacia Leaky earned bachelor and master’s degrees with us while developing engineering solutions for water purification in places like her home in Kenya. Today, she’s working on a doctorate at Oxford. Likewise, Jean Clifford Brutus earned two degrees with us. Coming to SBU through Suffolk County Community College, he served as president of our motorsports team. Today Cliff is enabling advances on the frontiers of particle physics at Brookhaven National Laboratory as a project engineer.
Does your path run through mechanical engineering?
- Whether you are in high school, or are long-done with your first college degree and thinking about returning, there’s a route to success for you to chart here.
- Does your company need world-best engineers? Reach out to us.
- Interested in supporting us in our mission? Engineering is a team sport.
Grateful every day to be a Seawolf,
P. Scott Carney
