Chair's Message

Jon LongtinWelcome to the Mechanical Engineering Department at Stony Brook University. Mechanical engineering is one of the core and broadest engineering disciplines offering students a wide range of career choices; its strong and broad technical foundation provides opportunities in both engineering practice and scientific research as well as non-engineering fields such as business, law or medicine.

The mechanical engineering program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, http://www.abet.org. Our undergraduate program is designed to provide students with the detailed mechanical engineering education and training required for immediate entry into the job market. At the same time, the curriculum maintains enough flexibility to enable students to fully prepare themselves for graduate studies and research careers. Mechanical engineering classes are taught by full-time faculty members and undergraduates are encouraged to work directly with the faculty in their technical electives. They also have the opportunities to participate in the Stony Brook University's URECA program and in national and international student engineering competitions. Our Senior Design experience offers students opportunities for solving real-world problems in a multi-disciplinary setting.

Our graduate program offers Masters and doctoral degrees in Design and Manufacturing, Computational and Experimental Solid Mechanics, and Fluid Mechanics, Heat Transfer and Thermodynamics. Our faculty members are involved in cutting-edge and cross-disciplinary research in areas such as MEMS, Nanotechnology, Computer Aided Engineering, and Biomedical Engineering. Please read about our combined BE/MS Program here.

While you are here, explore our website and if you have a question, please contact us.
